Luke Chapter 2

In my ongoing attempt to be Mom of The Year (which has been noticeably less frequent this fall), last night at dinner I read from the advent calendar book (that I made a few years back, when I was still in the running for M.O.Y.).

We read the story of Jesus birth in Luke, and talked about the swaddling clothes. See, on the way to Mothers Day Out, Wyatt said,

"Why are babies always naked, and you have to wrap them up?"

I figured he was talking about Jesus, so thought---hey, let's make swaddling clothes....and it happened to be the exact lesson from our advent book that day.

Coincidence?
I think not. (I secretly think he can read, but plays dumb)
So, I cut up one of Aaron's t-shirts. (Sorry...but it was from church so that counts, right?)

And we wrapped them up:

Then they fed them (no bottles left at our house, so they improvised with straws:

Then they burped them.

Incessantly.

Why do I do this to myself?

Post note: Some of you will recognize Wyatt's Halloween costume in this photo. Yes, he's still wearing it...why?

Curry Family Fun

It all started last weekend, when Jenna cut off her bangs. The ones she has been growing out for months. I threatened to cut off her hair, and while watching "Ratatouille," she decided it would be cute to have it short. (So much for punishment....)

So today, after a soccer game where she scored to goals, we all went for grooming: 1 pedicure, 1 eyebrow wax, and 3 haircuts, to-go, please. We went home with this little pixie:
Wyatt left with a mohawk. He also fell asleep...sitting straight up in a hair-dryer chair waiting for all of us to be done. (What a guy!)

Good Thing It Wasn't COD

Last month, Aaron and I attended a charity auction in Kansas City, and somehow bought stuff we didn't mean to....So the organization shipped it to us today in an unbelievable huge box!

I feel like I owe them a thank you card b/c Wyatt has been playing in it (he's a new puppy that just got shipped to me...I have to act surprised when I open the lid), and when Jenna gets home, it will probably keep them happy for hours.

If you were thinking of getting my kids any toys for Christmas, don't. Just ship an empty box...

Parental Influence

Jenna is home from school today for some holiday, so at lunch, I taught them a few very important lessons they will need someday:

Hey, at least they are eating their fruits and veggies....

wyatt writes and types

Wyatt and I are playing school today. I wrote my name, and he wrote his. He typed this story to tell you all about his day!
Hope you all are having a wonderful day!

I was forced, against my will to attend the Oklahoma State Game on Saturday. I was accused my my hubby and FIL of not being in the spirit, but my toe nails were painted orange, I promise.

I did, however, drink an adult beverage out of an orange can, and let my kids wear orange. Wyatt saw his shirt with the OSU mascot on it and said, "I hate Pistol Pete." And I laughed but didn't egg him on. I swear.
In the car, Aaron told me I needed to conform and get into the school spirit. (As if) He was trying to get me to say "Go Pokes!" All I could muster was "Go Oklahoma" and "Boomer Pokes", neither of which he appreciated.
Who's scared of a Poke anyway? (I know...who's scared of a Sooner right? We at least we carry shotguns...)

The kids had a lot of fun, and Wyatt won a pair of binoculars from the Verizon booth for doing a "Dance Off" for the crowd. He's pretty fly for a white guy.
I always feel compelled to make lots of jokes at the expense of OSU when I go to their turf. (And it's not often that I'm invited, so I save them up.) I'd like to share with you now, my perennial favorite:
Ahem.
Hey...did you hear they're going to remove the artificial turf and replace it with grass? Turns out the cheerleaders need someplace to graze at halftime....
Ba-dum-Pum.

The Board

Some of you may know that I am involved with the Board of the Junior League of Norman, and a few weeks ago we had a very fun retreat. This is a photo of my Posse that I will be spending the next 9 months with, and I thought you'd like to see them.

I also included a photo of us, hard at work at our retreat...

First Day of School

Rememeber when school used to start in the Fall? I don't think we have any business starting school in August, on any day that ends in "-teenth."

But here we sit:

This year, I forced her to hug me b/c I'm still in therapy about last year (see last year's blog post about first day of school). She did, then found all her friends from last year.

In true Curry spirit, she already got a warning about talking too much to her friends when she was supposed to be learning. (Some of you may remember that, in kindergarten, this unique trait granted her a month in Mrs. Schall's "special desk"....the one right beside the teacher's desk, far from other students.)

I got to chat with her teacher for a long while at back -to-school night b/c we were so late getting there. (Due to much debate over the outfit displayed in the previous post...)

As luck would have it, she and I had some mutual friends in college. She was the high school debate partner of one of my college speech teammates. Guess who will be winning most of the arguments in the classroom this year? :-)

What Goes Around....

It seems like I already had post with that title, but I'm sure there will be many more.

Hey, Mom? Dad? Remember in the 80's when you were so embarrassed about some of the things I wore?

Thought you'd like to see what Wyatt wore to Back To School night...for 1000 of our closest friends and neighbors to see:

At least you can't see his shield, b/c "it's invisible to people."

San Antonio

We spent last week in San Antonio with 1200 of Mass Mutual's finest people at Leaders Club (or as I have now deemed it: Eaters Club....cuz it was one big buffet).
We played, ate, toured, ate, went to a rodeo, ate, and went to Sea World, where we watched seals eat....
Here are some highlights:
My Little Tour-on:
Wyatt charmed everyone with his cowboy hat, and his knack for telling bad jokes on the tour bus at 10:30 at night.

Ahhhh, a small Sooner easily out-wits a large Texas Longhorn....no surprise there.

Jenna got her faced painted 2 night in a row, and would like you all to know that she can now turn 3 consecutive sommersaults underwater, thanks to hours in the hotel pool.

I think this is a Barbie Doll hat...just proves that everything really is bigger in Texas.

We had Dinner With Shamu at Seaworld. The kids loved it, but they were at tiny bit afraid he might scoot over that ledge and eat them.
On the way home, we stayed at Aaron's aunt's home and rode her horse. Even mom got in the action (please insert your favorite joke about rear-ends here...)

Git along little doogies....now it's back to reality!

The Toe

Poor Jenna....not known for her grace! On Tuesday night, sitting at the kitchen bar, she reached for a toy way too far away, and tipped the chair, and herself. The chair fell on her pinky toe, smashing it on the tile.
I took her to urgent care yesterday for an x-ray, and the pinky toe is broken. That's actually the good news, b/c we just tape it for a few weeks, and she can swim, bathe, etc.
Then the doc says, "Normally I wouldn't see an ortho for a broken toe, but it's twisted out just a little, so you might want to see one, b/c sometimes the have to pin these."
Pin the pinky toe on a 7 year old?!?!? Are you kidding?
Here's the best part: Exactly 2 weeks ago today, I saw my ortho for the last time and said, "It's been great...may we never meet again!"
As it turns out, he doesn't accept my health insurance, so we can't go there...may not go at all...am I a bad parent for that?

Fourth of July

We were very lucky to have lots of fireworks this weekend! On Friday, we went to the Curry's and set off a few in the backyard.

On Saturday, we went out to a friends farm, and saw the small town parade on the way. At the farm we ate yummy, homegrown burgers, and did some swimming. All the adult (and I use that term loosely) males were doing flips off the diving board, and Aaron was not about to be outdone:

Thankfully, no one needed a medic.

Wyatt discovered all the tractors, and like any male named "Wyatt" he drove all 5 of them:

We all went home for long, yummy naps, and then a HUGE storm rolled in. The night cooled off, and we went to watch fireworks, but they had been postponed to Sunday. So we found a vacant lot in the middle of Moore, and watched all the neighborhoods around shoot them off. We had no idea you could buy this sort of stuff at the Fireworks stand! I guess the cops gave up, b/c we saw them just drive past people shooting them off in the streets.

The kids poked their heads out the sun roof to watch all around, and Wyatt said, "This is the best family fun night ever!"

So, on Sunday we packed up for fireworks again, and watched them in Norman. We were treated to 3 other shows on the way home, not including the "Redneck Specials" along the way.

Family Ties

My Grandpa (Papa Gene) and my Aunt Trina stopped by this week on their cross country trek from California to Alabama, to see family.

They stopped by our house for the night, and even though my kids didn't remember them, they were so excited, they jumped all over them to say hi. Wyatt nearly tackled my poor grandpa!.

I told Wyatt he could sleep in my room b/c Papa Gene would be in his room. Wyatt said he'd just sleep with Papa Gene, but I told him Papa Gene snores too loudly.

He had been here about 10 minutes when I heard Wyatt say, "Come on and see my room, Papa Gene. Hey, how loud can you snore? I bet I can snore really loud, too!"
I have another photo with Trina in it, but she's still in her jammies and will never speak to me again if I post it for all the world to see....

Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's RODEO!

Saturday night, we went to a rodeo with the kids. They asked, "What's a rodeo?" and I said, "Don't tell Grandpa you asked me that...."

We were a little early for the rodeo, so we ate at Jake's Ribs (whatever image you have in your head right now is probably correct..), then went to the park. Jenna took this photo:

They rode a horse, chased calves in the arena, and contemplated whether or not Wyatt is ready for Mutton Busting. (Wyatt and I think yes...Aaron was shocked that I would let Wyatt do something dangerous, for once. I told him falling off a sheep in a dirt arena is not dangerous....)

Aaron was a complete Tour-On (that's a combo between a tourist and a moron...) and videoed every moment, included the bareback riding event.
As we were leaving, Wyatt said, "Dad, when we get home, can we play bucking bull and you be the bull?" Ahhhh, a new sport for Aaron.

Postlude: On Sunday morning while I was out running, a game of Bucking Bull did ensue in the living room. Guess who got hurt? Not the cowgirl or cowboy....the bull. But that's another post altogether.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

In my ongoing attempt to win the Mom-Of-The-Award, I put the ladder in our backyard so Wyatt can watch all the earthmovers that have begun construction on the new school. The tractors are so close that they wave over the fence to us as they drive by. It's mind-numbing for me, but he can stand there for hours!
He just came in and informed that it looks like they are doing things correctly back there, so that's good...

Fathers Day, Part 2

Forgot to add the Famous Curry Family "Cha-Cha Slide" starring Aaron's dad, sister and niece....I sat this one out....

And my handsome boys:

Wyatt wore his tie to church and was a door greeter with Aaron...he was so proud of himself!

Happy Father's Day

For all you manly men out there, I say Happy Father's Day to You!
My sweet hubby spent the day doing the one thing fathers love: getting his hair done by his little girl:

She went to a fabulous b-day party on Sat. and got her hair and nails done. Apparently, she has found her calling becuase I found this note on her bedroom door today:

After Aaron's got his cut and color, we went to the Curry's for some fierce lawn games and swimming:

Ready for A Meeting at the Chapter House....

Today, my grandma sent a birthday gift for Wyatt, including a shirt and tie. he was so excited to put it on and be "just like daddy!" I grabbed two blazers from his closet, and he chose the nicer of the two (good taste, I see). He put it on over his shirt and tie (Jenna was trying to help him clip it on...) and said, "Now I'm ready to go to work. Oh, I need pants."

I Guess We'll Hear It

On Thursday, there were trucks parked in the open lot behind our house all day, and we could see men working. They are supposed to be breaking ground on a new elementary school, so we figured it was the beginning.
I stupid told the kids they were building the school, and all day Wyatt kept saying, "Is the school done yet?"

So at 5, we went to the gym, and when we came home, we found this right outside our fence.

It's Moore, OK newest tornado siren. Not sure yet if it will help or hurt our property value, but we really don't have a choice in the matter. And it we ever need it, we'll be ever so glad it's there.

Happy Birthday to Wyatt!

Today is Wyatt's 4th birthday! I thought all of you in my family would especially appreciate this great photo i took, COMPLETELY UNCOACHED!

He had 5 little friends over, and the kids ran in sprinkler, threw water balloons, and ate lots of junk. A good time was had by all!
He also upgraded to the new booster seat, which means he can buckle himself in, and switching cars is very easy now. The new car seat also has a reading light attached to the headrest, for those late-nite comic books....

Sweet freedom

Yeah! after 5 weeks in a cast, i got it cut off today, under Wyatt's watchful eye. You'll be happy to know I'm not including a photo of my hand and arm....
I just got released from Physical Therapy for my neck and ribs last week, (i spent every mother's day out day there for 5 weeks), and will now go back next week for some hand therapy. Can't wait.
The good news is that i can type better, but still not with my little sad pinky. The better news is that I can WASH MY HANDS.
I can also stop making up stories about why i have a cast....the truth got a little old after the 1000th time, so I started to 'embelish' some. I'm sure you are all shocked to hear that...
I flew to atlanta last week for a Junior League Leadership conference, and found that airport security takes casts pretty seriously. I was hoping for a free xray to check on my progress, but only got swabbed for drugs and explosives.
Oh, and this odd note: At said conference, there was also a gathering of 3000 archeologists. It was plainly obvious who was with which conference....

Comuppance

Just so you all know, my runaway mouth has been securley bequeathed to my children.
Last nite, my Bible study group was leaving my house, and Wyatt was helping me shut the door. As the last fellow left, Wyatt said, "Hey!" and my friend turned to look, "He looks fat!" said Wyatt in his loudest voice, as i slam the door quickly.
(This, from the kid who was too sick to get off the couch until three p.m. Thanks to a hearty dose of Motrin, he was jumping on the couch by six p.m.)
All this reminded me of a story from Jenna's 3rd year of life, that I will now share to further my humiliation.
She and I were in a packed elevator at Childrens Hospital, and there was a man with a tiny baby with a very large hemangioma on the side of her nose. The whole way down, I was talking to Jenna, hoping to distract her. When the doors opened,I breathed a sigh of relief as everyone began to file out. But they were all within earshot when Jenna exclaimed brightly, "That baby had a great, big red nose!"
I heard someone behind me gasp (as if I trained Jenna to say these things), but the father said nothing. He looked to be of foreign descent, so I console myself by saying that his English wasn't so great...

Happy Easter

We hope you all have had a wonderful Easter! The Curry family had a few moments that you might apprecitate:

Cutest: on thursday, wyatt & i go to bible study, and he must have discussed palm sunday b/c he was walking around saying, "hosanna! yeah, jesus!"

Most proud: Jennas sunday school teacher said today that she was so impressed with her b/c Jenna asked if she could lead the Lords Prayer for the class and she knew every word. Aaron started teaching this to the kids when they were 2, so he gets all the credit.

saddest: our fish, tracy, died after being part of our family for over 2 years. I wanted to avoid telling the kids, but aaron wants them to live in reality. so he says, "Kids. I want to show you something. (points to fish tank). Tracy is dead." the end. no one ever said he was a sensitive guy. I found jenna crying alone a few minutes later, while wyatt was gleefully helping aaron flush tracy. no telling what wyatt will flush next.
it did give us a great opportunity to talk about eternity, though.

it's freezing and rainy here...hope you all have a blessed day!

Slugger

wyatt started playing t-ball last month, and his team had their first game this week (the pre season tournament!)

he picked how to wear his hat:

the helmet was so big, i think it threw him off balance when he ran:

the funniest part was when he was runnig to second base and the opponent was standing on it. wyatt turned back to the first base coach, shrugged & yelled,"where am i supposed to stand?"
next practice, we're teaching him to push 'em off.
you all will be shocked to learn that i am on over enthusastic mom who, when the ball was rolling toward my son in right field, shouted, "Wyatt! get that ball!"
i turned to aaron & said,"I just became THAT mom!"

Spring Break or What Really Matters

I love the concept of spring break, until it actually arrives and I then realize that it is NOT A BREAK FOR ME!

I do, however, get to take my kids to the in-laws tonite (one nite only, but I'm going to beg mercy for more....). I'm training them to pack their own suitcases (since their father didn't learn til AFTER college...), but I always, ahem...edit. Here's what Wyatt packed on his own:
He has all the vitals: A car, a gun, his pillow, his dancing machine, and one shoe. Sounds like all you need for a great Spring Break (minus a keg).
He also had jammies and clean underpants, so we're getting somewhere.

More Mexico

Just to make those of you still stuck in a frozen tundra feel worse, I got some new photos of our trip to Mexico, just to rub it in:

This first shot involved no tequila, I promise. And yes, the ground was very uneven. I am not that short, as my sister so deftly pointed out.

We went out on the ocean in a raft (yikes!) to watch whales. This is mating and birthing season, so we watched this guy doing his mating dance. You can see how close the other boat was, and I was greatful not to be in that one. (Although, that one offered adult beverages, which I may have needed, had I been that close....)

This is Aaron and 2 other guys, sitting on our raft. In the back, you see Lover's Beach, that is good for swimming. On the other side of the rocks, is Divorce beach, where the Pacific Ocean meets the inlet, and it really rough. Of course, we rode the raft through an even smaller gap in the rocks and over the waves, much to my dismay. It was pretty, though!

Slugger

Wyatt has joined a Tee Ball team of 3 & 4 year olds. I went to get him cleats(? spikes?) this week (he is one size smaller than the littlest size they make!).

He also got the xxsmall baseball pants, and, get this, a left-handed glove (also World's teeniest.) He appears to throw left, and bat right. Can that be?

Last Wednesday, he came home from practice sneezing and coughing (welcome, spring!), but by Friday was wheezing and gasping. So we went to the doctor, and he got a breathing treatment, some steroids, and a new inhaler! We also went for a chest x-ray after he was chock full of uppers. Here's how it went with the x-ray tech:

"What's that? How's it work? Why is mom wearing that apron? Ohhhh, look at my apron, how cute? What's your name? Are you taking a photo of my tummy? Is it going to be loud? Will this hurt? Can I have more chic-fil-a? Where's my Sprite?"

X-Ray tech: "He sure is a talker."

Me: "You should meet his dad..."

Anyway, he's fine now.

Here's Your Sign

And while we were gone, they posted this sign at the entrance to our neighborhood.
How did they know? Did they take a poll?
What's next: Short Bus Parking Signs?
Honestly, they've putting putting up this same sign for how long? Could they not think of better verbage at this point?

Mexico

Aaron and I were so fortunate to go on the Top Producers Trip for his agency a few weeks ago. It was one week after the Great Ice Storm, so I was so glad to leave.
We started the weekend in Tulsa at his company award banquet, where he won the Junior Partner Award--I was so proud of him!
So off to Mexico with 8 other fabulous couples. We ate, laid around, and watched whales jumping out of the ocean. We even went out to sea to watch them up close....in a raft! Yikes!
Here's the view from hotel...it was pretty rough.
